Beef Dripping Jacket Chips Miller and Carter

I've heard a lot of positive chat about Miller & Carter on gluten free Facebook groups lately so I was excited to visit this week for my birthday! There are two in Glasgow but the City Centre one was fully booked (on a Tuesday night!!) so we went to the one in Newton Mearns instead. Sadly it was absolutely pouring so I didn't get any pictures of the outside which was a shame as it's got a lovely big seating area out in front.

I asked them for a gluten free menu and was given one which was very detailed – hooray! My pet hate is when restaurants don't have proper gluten free menus as it makes everything so much more difficult. Everything sounded incredible. They have a really good range of gluten free starters, steaks, main dishes and desserts so there was plenty of choice. I decided not to have a starter but instead enjoy a cocktail while my parents had their muggle starters. For my main I ordered a filet steak – it was my birthday so why not – although I was really tempted by the Buttermilk Roasted Chicken!

The steak comes with a lettuce wedge, dipping sauce, onion loaf and a choice of potato. Imagine my delight when the waitress told me that although they weren't on the menu, the chips were in fact gluten free and fried in a dedicated fryer! This is something you need to check as not all locations have a fryer just for chips. The onion loaf is also gluten free and I was able to select from a variety of dipping sauces – I went with a traditional gravy, or Beef Dripping Sauce as they call it here. Much classier.

All the food smelled and tasted incredible. The chips are very lightly seasoned which gives them a really nice flavour and the steak was cooked to perfection. It comes served with garlic butter on top which means you don't really need to use your dipping sauce for your steak if you don't want to as the butter gives loads of flavour itself. The onion loaf was a total surprise to me as I didn't really know what to expect. It seems to be fried onions but I assume they use some kind of flour to bind them together in to a "loaf". I had kind of envisioned it as a "Bloomin' Onion" like you get in Outback Steakhouse in America but it wasn't anything like that at all.

Overall, the beef gravy was a highlight. I dipped everything in there! Steak, onion loaf, lettuce, chips…it was all amazing. I love gravy and have really missed chips and gravy from my student days so this felt like a real treat. My dad had a filet steak with a mushroom sauce and my mum had the Tandoori Lamb which is also on the gluten free menu. She said it was really good too.

For dessert I ordered the Crème brûlée because it;s one of my favourite gluten free desserts. The waitress was lovely and wrote "Happy Birthday" on the plate with sauces which she checked were gluten free. She said she would usually put cookies on there too, but she just gave me some fruit instead. My dessert was amazing and it had little sugary pieces of berry on the top which were delicious. My dad had a muggle cookies and ice cream dessert and my mum had the gluten free strawberry and prosecco meringue which she said was very light and refreshing.

We were so impressed with Miller & Carter. I haven't had a steak that good in a long time and I really loved that so much was gluten free. I felt like I was eating a normal meal for a change as there were no modifications that had to be made. The service was amazing and the restaurant itself is lovely. I would definitely return and I look forward to visiting the City Centre branch too.

They don't have the gluten free menu available online, but you can view the full selection of Miller & Carter menus at Newton Mearns here.
